been awhile again

so i think i just found a use for this. i dont really like to post inbetween pics of my art on my deviantart or face book... so this blog seems like a good place for WIP shots.
here is a piece im currently doing for a little good hearted, talent building competition over at www.penciljack.com - the Character is a pretty obscure old school video game character called Karnov.

this first shows my fairly loose pencils... which are digital. i didnt want to waste time with scanning or erasing and what not. im leaning more and more to completely digital.
then i start in on inking. you can see i add alot of final elements here. more details than in the pencils. some hints at rendering. i find nowadays i either do very little rendering or i go all out on it. i havnt decided what im gonna do with this one yet. when i do barely any its for the reason that i want to try and do the rendering with colors. we will see. sometimes rending in ink though just looks too darn good to not do.

GI JOOOOOOOOOOOE

this is not official work. i wish it would have been but it didnt work out. was helping out Danny http://dannycruz4.deviantart.com/ doing some layering in his different versions for the IDW gijoe covers. decided to ink one and get it in front of some eyes over there.

its kind of weird seeing dannny's fluid pencils inked with such precision and separation but i still think the end result looks rad. this was the Duke version of the 3 he did (hes posted the snake eyes one on his profile so far) i tried to outdo myself with some super fine feathering. cant even see some of it unless you do the huge download. i was challenged to make this so precise out of just black and white... being that danny pencils in graytones and whatnot. i think i made some good choices and some ok ones. a few spots could use some rework. but im leaving it as it is.

Flyer

this is just a design piece.
i do alot of flyers for shows with local bands and whatnot.
this is one that i didnt really take much time doing but i liked how it turned out. sometimes i actually use that graphic design degree i got.

all photoshop
the skeleton, skull, and border elements are some stock vector graphics i got for free at Vintage Vectors website
the paper texture i just typed in "old paper texture" into google image search and found it.

designed with a old looking typewriter font and then i went through and did some further "eroding" on the text and graphics... and presto.

i like it.

Words of Wisdom

"Art is very difficult. It demands humility and respect. It also requires a tremendous amount of practice, determination and commitment on the part of the artist. Your ability to achieve and understanding of this craft and your ability to make a living is largely a result of your determination and your will. Talent makes an appearance somewhere. But talent with no drive or hunger is pretty darn useless. The amount of passion and stamina required to become and remain an artist has to last a lifetime. You have to want this more than ANYTHING else." - Klaus Janson on becoming an comic book artist...

i printed this out and hung it up. time to get to work.
